BOARD GAMES
5 Fun Family Board Games

Board games allow families to spend quality time together, at a reasonable cost. These board games are far cheaper than a day trip to a theme park and are perfect for rainy days.  Best of all these board games teach lessons in a fun way, which is also good.

Monopoly is a great board game that has brought families together for generations. This game allows family members to purchase properties and upgrade them.  Of course, there are bonuses and bills in this game with the community chest cards.  This can be played as a timed game or an all out winner takes all type of game.  It’s perfect for a cold winter afternoon or a rainy summer day when the kids are stuck inside. There are many versions of the game that families can choose.
Ages 8 and up
Players 2 to 8

Candy Land is another game that has been helping families with young children have quality time together for generations.  The premise of the game is simple enough for young children to understand and the challenge of the right moves keep them entertained as they race around the board.
Ages 3 to 6
Players 2 to4

Trivial Pursuit allows families who enjoy trivia to play a board game.  There are many versions of this game so it can be for all ages to enjoy no matter their interest.  This game does have small circles with small pie shaped pieces that are inserted as a player answers the trivia question correctly.  The original version has six different areas of trivia, hence the six pieces of pie.  The specialized versions may be more suitable for your family.
Ages 8 and up
Players 2 to 4

Scrabble is a fun family game that allows players to create words from tiles they draw.  This one is better for older children and adults as sometimes it can be a challenge.  Each of the tiles used to create the words have a different amount of points associated with them and these points are added up to get the score when you place the words on the board.

Life is a board game with high money values, and it’s perfect for teenagers.  The players land on a career path that determines their payday.  Pick a car, hop in… and take a spin to face all that LIFE has to offer!  Land a great job, get married, and fill up your car with kids! Your goal is to dodge bad luck and make a buck.  Along the way earn Life Tiles by doing good deeds and helping your community.  Life Tiles mean extra money for you down the road! End up with the biggest fortune, and you’ll retire in style as a winner!  This game goes quickly and it fun to play.

GRANDMA’S ZUCCHINI CAKE RECIPE

Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 45 minutes
The frosting amount assumes that you are
going to keep the cake in the pan and only
frost the top. If you plan on removing the cake
from the pan and frosting the sides, you’ll
want to up the frosting amounts.

Ingredients:

Cake:

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons cinnamon (can sub 1 teaspoon
with other spices such as allspice and nutmeg,
go easy on the cloves though)
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3 eggs
2 cups white, granulated sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest (optional, my addition)
2 cups (from about 3-4 regular sized zucchini)
grated un-peeled zucchini (place grated zucchini in a sieve
and press out some of the excess moisture before measuring)
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (my grandmother
recommends black walnuts)
1/2 cup golden raisins (optional)

Frosting:

3 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
(Philadelphia cream cheese recommended)
1/4 cup butter, room temperature
1 1/2 to 2 cups of powdered sugar

Method

1.  Preheat oven to 350°F.
Butter a 9x12 or 9x13 baking pan
(I used a pyrex pan).

2.  In a medium bowl, whisk together
the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, salt,
and baking powder. Set aside.

3.  In a mixer, beat the 3 eggs on high speed
until frothy. Lower the speed and beat in the sugar,
vegetable oil, vanilla, and lemon zest (if using).
Stir in the flour mixture, a third at a time. Stir in the
zucchini and chopped nuts and/or raisins.

4.  Pour mixture into a 9x12 or 9x13 baking pan.
Bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes. (My grandmother’s
notes say you can also bake in an angel food pan for 1 hour.)
Remove from oven and let cool completely before frosting.
(While the cake is cooling, let the frosting’s cream cheese
and butter sit at room temperature to soften.)

5 To make the frosting, beat together the cream cheese
and butter. Add the powdered sugar and beat until smooth.

Frost the cake and serve. Store covered with aluminum foil.

Yield: Makes about 20 pieces.
